We were really excited to take part in the Open For Business Project and Exhibition at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). Year 9 pupils jumped straight into the project feet first as part of their timetabled STEM lessons.
We studied the history of Industry in Manchester, with each group picking a theme that interested them: Aerospace, Textiles, or Computing. After careful research, pupils linked with a local company and used their products as a stimulus to create a piece of artwork detailing the story of that industry in Sale and Greater Manchester.
Pupils also looked to the Magnum Photographers for inspiration too, studying some photography techniques and ideas. They were able to put these techniques into practice with the pin-hole cameras that they built. Even though the results weren’t quite as good as the digital cameras commonly used today, this allowed the pupils to thoroughly understand and apply the Science and Maths behind lenses, cameras and photography in a creative way.
In April we visited MOSI with cameras poised to learn more about our chosen industries and put our photography skills to the test and we were delighted to learn that two of our groups’ work was later chosen for display at the Museum as part of the Open For Business exhibition.
